We saw these advertised on television this spring -- a "topsy-turvey" planter where the plant grows out the bottom! And I picked one up at the store out of curiosity, for about half the televised price (I paid $10). It's a little hard to tell foreground from background, but I'm talking about the green plastic thing, below which three feet of tomato plant hangs (growing vigorously).
I don't know about your neck of the woods, but they are all over ours -- the store sold out that day, before I could get back to buy a couple more for a matched set -- and, ugly as they are, they figure prominently on front porches on every block in our neighborhood.
It's kinda cool, even if ugly. I planted it with Sweet Millions, and they are just starting. I'm sorry that the tomatoes will start turning red when the family is in Minnesota later this month, but The Texan will be able to eat tomatoes by the handful.

They are all the rage in MA.
Still haven't figured out how they work.
Of course, if we don't get any sun pretty soon we won't have to bother.
They work by -- well, you put the plant in thru a hole in the bottom, (there's a dense sponge that rests in the hold, with a slit through it that goes around the stem of the tomato). Then fill the plastic thingy with compost and soil. A hole in the top provides watering access. The plant at first reaches out from under the plastic thing to get sun, but after that, just grows normally.
Surprising how simple, actually.
