HomoDommi has been having great fun building a storage unit at the base of the basement stairs. This space -- about 4 feet by 18 feet -- has been full of, mostly, piles of junk. A small backup freezer, a chest of drawers full of blankets we never use, a china-cabinet overflowing with Christmas china that didn't fit tidily, stuff from the kitchen that was on its way to storage but got set down early.
The top photo shows the space after everything was moved out. The middle photo, his finished product. The bottom photo shows an example of how much storage space he's created, and how he has customized it to fit our needs.
He's now busily working on another such built-in, this time mostly bookshelves, with a coordinating large boxed-in area for the cat litter boxes. These cabinets will allow clean storage, encourage sorting (between To-Store, To-Charity, To-Trash), and open up areas of the basement to hold my own furniture, which is currently in paid-for storage elsewhere.
